FEBRUARY 2004
The Season of Epiphany
When we were asked to write a piece for the Parish Magazine we felt it
was quite fitting that it should be for the February edition, which
falls in the season of Epiphany, as this is the time for focusing on
Christian fellowship and brotherhood. For the Protestant church, the
season of Epiphany extends from January 6th until Ash Wednesday, which
begins the season of Lent. The term Epiphany means to ‘show' or 'to
make known' or even 'to reveal'
Neither of us held any strong religious views or had any leanings to
attend church before we moved into the Parish of Datchworth. However,
after attending the Midnight Mass Service in the Christmas of 1997 at
All Saints' Church, we were captivated by the service and the warmth of
the congregation. So much so, that we immediately felt compelled to
return for the next Sunday morning service and here began quite an
amazing journey for us both.
We soon became regular members of the
congregation and within two year's one of us was baptised (Mike) and
both of us confirmed and we now consider ourselves very much a part of
the All Saint's family.
Richard Syms’ retirement in the summer
of last year was a great personal loss to us, as he was both our mentor
and spiritual leader. He helped us lay the foundations of our
relationship with God and with the family of All Saints' Church.
Whilst the services of Reverends Mike
Shaw, Tony Sophianou and Mervyn Terrett have been invaluable, following
Richard's departure, the interregnum is proving a difficult period for
us all, but the fellowship of the church remains strong. This is
epitomised by the continuing commitment to the construction of our new
Parish Hall and the fund raising efforts that have made this possible.
We have been very fortunate to be part
of the fund ' raising team and to be involved first hand in a number of
the events throughout last year. It was so rewarding to see the people
of the village pulling together in one common aim and we sincerely hope
that once the Parish Hall is complete, it will be a venue for many
activities that will nurture our relationship with the village
community.
Our lives have been made richer by the
love and support that we have received from our many new friends at the
All Saints' church.
Peace be with you all.
